The Broadband Excellence Awards presented by the World Broadband Association (WBBA) is the pinnacle of the annual awards program, designed to honor industry achievements and innovation without compromise to commercial interests, ensuring the awards remain the gold standard of recognition in the broadband industry.

Outstanding Contribution to Network Excellence

The Outstanding Contribution to Network Excellence Award recognizes achievements in broadband network infrastructure that demonstrate substantial revenue generation, reduction to the costs of operating a network and improvement in network accessibility, user experience and energy efficiency, etc.

This award is open to all companies and organizations in the broadband sector.

Criteria will include an assessment of:
  • Performance, stability, and reliability across the target region
  • Benefits to the enterprise and / or residential users level of innovation demonstrated
  • Achievements in sustainability

Excellence in Broadband Application

The Excellence in Broadband Application Award recognizes the best practices of co-operation between multiple ecosystem players across the broadband industry to drive digital transformation and create services in areas such as smart city, smart education, smart healthcare, smart hotel, smart home, industry IoT, etc.

This award is open to entry for all companies and organisations in the ecosystem and must be applied for as a group of two or more entities.

Criteria will include an assessment of:

  • Examples of effective cooperation between ecosystem partners to maximise achievement of shared goal
  • Impact on digital transformation
  • Level of innovation demonstrated
  • Benefits to society, enterprise, and consumer

Network Innovation Excellence towards realisation of Future Networks and Services

The Network Innovation Excellence towards realisation of Future Networks and Services Award highlights the innovations and breakthrough technologies towards future network, including network service, network security, network application, cloud and network convergence, AI for network, deterministic network, other innovative network solution, applications, and services.

This award is open to all companies and organizations in the broadband sector and can be applied for singly or jointly.

Criteria will include an assessment of:

  • Level of innovation specially aimed at shaping the future of networks
  • Demonstrations of innovations that
  • Relate to network solutions, applications and services
  • The network solution, application or service will benefit from being a true innovation that reflects a new development in the market
  • Benefit to the end users of the relevant network solutions, applications and services

Product and Solution Excellence

This Product and Solution Excellence Award honours excellences in innovation in equipment, device, service, and application solution that will ultimately accelerate the success of the industry. This award is open to all vendors that provide products, devices, services, applications, and solutions.

Criteria will include an assessment of:

  • Status of solution
  • Cutting-edge technology
  • Ability to support customers
  • Financial advantages
  • Level of innovation

Gigacity Excellence

Entry Information

The Gigacity Award recognizes municipalities that have successfully invested to become Gigacities and promote broadband excellence.  This category will be assessed against the WBBA published criteria for Gigacities.

Entry to this award is open municipalities of all sizes that are investing to achieve gigacity status for their municipality.

  • General status of the fixed broadband development in the city（less than 500 words） This may include, but is not limited to, the following:
  • The scale of fixed broadband networks, and the scale of fixed broadband subscribers, fixed broadband technologies(copper, fibre-GPON, fiber-10GPON, fibre-EPON, etc.)
  • The available main-stream fixed broadband bundles
  • Policies and subsidies to promote the development of fibre broadband
  • Broadband application in basic service fields such as municipal administration, healthcare, education, and transportation, etc.
  • Key indicators according to Giga-city definition from WBBA
Other basic data and optional Metrics
  • Number of residents
  • Number of household in the city
  • Are there Gigbit of above FBB bundle available in the city? Yes/No
  • Maximum FBB bundle in the city
One typical FBB application Reference Case（max 300 words)
  • E.g. a typical community application for home uses or application in the basic services’ field related to the economy and people's livelihood such as education, healthcare, municipal Services, etc.
  • Submissions Open: Tuesday 7 May
  • Submissions Close: Wednesday 31 July
  • Shortlist Announced: Monday 9 September
  • Winners Announced: Tuesday 8 October
  • No entry fee is required.
  • Each company can enter multiple awards, but only one product/solution per category.
  • Answers must adhere to the word limit, with the option to include supporting documentation.

  • Entries exceeding the 500-word limit will not be considered for review by the judges.
  • The awards (Except Gigacity Excellence) recognize recent industry application, innovations, specifically products and initiatives launched since October 2023.
  • The Gigacity Excellence awards will be evaluated based on performance since October 2021.
  • Submissions will be forwarded to the judges for assessment against the listed criteria below following the nominations deadline.
  • Judges, selected for their industry expertise, will remain impartial and recuse themselves from evaluating submissions from their own companies, if necessary.
  • The highest-scoring submissions will be shortlisted, and award recipients will be revealed during the Official Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, 8 October..

The WBBA, along with its partner Informa Tech, acknowledges and values the sensitive nature of the information provided in the entries. We ensure that this understanding is upheld by the judging panel, and entries are treated with strict confidentiality throughout the judging process.

The judging panel is carefully chosen to prevent any potential conflicts of interest. If an entry is shortlisted, only non-confidential extracts from the entry summary will be used for the awards ceremony and any related editorial coverage.

WBBA judges are meticulously chosen for their extensive market knowledge, esteemed reputation within the industry, and commitment to impartiality.

Each judge independently and anonymously evaluates every entry on a scale of 1 to 10, considering both the information provided in the entry and any accompanying supporting materials.

The scores are aggregated, and the entrant with the highest average score emerges as the winner. In the event of a tie, judges deliberate to determine the ultimate victor.

Any attempt by an entrant to provide additional information or exert undue influence on the judges will result in their disqualification from the awards process.

The complete Awards program, encompassing categories, judges, judging methodology, and more, will be prominently featured on the WBBA website.

  • Ensure Entry Meets the Criteria: Don't let simple errors like choosing the wrong category lead to rejection. Just as judges scrutinize submissions against the criteria, it's crucial to conduct the same review.
  • Bolster Your Entry with Customer Use-Cases: Highlighting real-world deployments, success stories, and customer benefits will significantly enhance the credibility of your application.
  • Respect the Word Limit: Maximize the 500-word limit by focusing on pertinent information. Incorporate statistics, figures, and measurable results to underscore your achievements. Real-life examples demonstrating the application of your technology and its impactful outcomes are highly recommended.
  • Be Direct and Concise: Capture the judges' attention by starting with key information about your entry. Provide clear, concise explanations of the What, Where, When, and How of the submission.
  • Don't Limit Yourself to One Category: Feel free to enter multiple categories. There's no restriction on the number of categories you can participate in.
  • Meet the Deadline: Ensure the entry is submitted on time. Late entries will not be considered.
