WBBA Advances Industry Development for ION-2030 in the AI Era at ECOC 2026

At ECOC 2026 in Málaga Spain, WBBA Director General Martin Creaner joined the ITU-T ION-2030 Symposium, where standards bodies, operators, vendors, and researchers discussed optical network evolution in the AI era. The event provided a platform to explore how AI is reshaping broadband and optical requirements, and how standards, innovations, and industry practices can align toward 2030.

Martin presented “The current state of AI in Broadband today, and its role in the future.” Drawing on WBBA’s operator research, he examined AI adoption across broadband, and the practical challenges operators face. He highlighted that data quality and staffing skills remain major barriers, while security and energy consumption are increasingly important. He summarized AI’s dual impact: “AI is part of the problem and part of the solution.”

In the closing panel, Martin stressed closer cooperation with ITU-T, ETSI, and other organizations on ION-2030. WBBA is in an excellent position to contribute an industry-development perspective, connecting operators, vendors, and ecosystem partners with standards evolution, market needs, and commercial practice. This helps keep emerging network visions and standards tied to real deployment needs. Through feedback, use cases, research, events, and market engagement, WBBA will continue supporting the ION-2030 ecosystem.
