A message from Dr Li Zhengmao, Chairman of the Board | World Broadband Association
On behalf of the Board of Directors of World Broadband Association (WBBA), I am writing to extend congratulations on the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
The key theme of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2024 is "Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development," which profoundly underscores the crucial role of information and communication technology in promoting global sustainable development. With the surge of digitization, emerging technologies and applications continuously provide robust momentum for economic growth, social progress, and environmental sustainability development. The coordinated development of global digitalization and greenization, empowered by ICT, plays a vital role in achieving carbon emission goals across various industries. By 2030, the emissions reduction enabled by ICT solutions will be nearly ten times the industry's own emissions. ICT is leveraging various fields of life and production as a key force driving global sustainable development, offering essential pathways to building a better future.
As a non-governmental and non-profit organization dedicated to advancing innovation and development in cloud and broadband technologies, WBBA has been committed to exploring efficient and intelligent green cloud and broadband networks. The association collaborates with global partners on key technologies and innovative practices in cloud and broadband, creating an open and inclusive platform for technological innovation and industrial development to empower the industry. Moreover, WBBA actively responds to and implements the commitments of the ITU's Partner2Connect Digital Alliance, bridging the digital divide and striving to maximize social, environmental, and economic benefits.
Mr Liu Zhiyong, Chairman of the WBBA Oversight Committee, and I recently visited the Secretary-General and the Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union in Geneva. We all agreed that our visions and goals are highly aligned and mutually supportive. We should strengthen cooperation to accelerate the construction of global cloud and broadband infrastructure, narrow the digital divide, and contribute to achieving the United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). ITU has agreed to admit WBBA as a formal member to further accelerate digital technology innovation and contribute to global sustainable development.
WBBA has launched the annual Broadband Excellence Contribution Award in acknowledging the achievements in cloud and broadband applications, technological innovations, and industry cooperation from the global community. There are total five categories, including
- Outstanding Contribution to Network Construction Award
- Best Industry Collaboration Award
- Best Innovation Award for Future Networks and Services
- Best Product and Solution Award
- Gigabit City Innovation Award
The association hopes to lead the development and technological progress of the cloud and broadband industry through benchmark cases and outstanding innovation achievements, promote technological exchanges and cooperation, aggregate the global industrial chain, and promote deep integration of digital technology innovation and economic and social sustainable development. The awards are now open for submission till 31st July 2024 and the ceremony will be host on 8th October 2024 in Paris.
Looking ahead, WBBA will continue to uphold the principles of "openness, cooperation, and win-win," work hand in hand with partners in the global information and communication industry, jointly promote digital technology innovation, and contribute to global sustainable development. We sincerely invite cloud and broadband operators, equipment manufacturers, and industry partners across the world to join WBBA, strengthen cooperation and sharing in infrastructure construction and key technology research, and make greater contributions to economic growth, social progress, and environmental sustainability.
We wish the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day event a complete success and the global information and communication industry a more brilliant future driven by digital innovation.
